Definition of Bench Hardness Tester

Bench hardness tester refers to large hardness testing machines like Rockwell hardness tester, brinell hardness tester and Vickers hardness tester. It is most commonly used in metrology room, research institutes and university laboratories with the feature of high precision and wide measuring range.

Classification: According to the different forces, bench hardness testers are divided into: Rockwell hardness tester, Brinell hardness tester, Vickers hardness tester, and Universal hardness tester.

1.What is Rockwell hardness tester?

Principle: the Rockwell method measures the permanent depth of indentation produced by a force. Press the indenter into the sample surface with the initial test force, and then apply the main test force. After remove the main test force, the depth of the indentation indicates the hardness.

Classification:

Based on application, there is Rockwell hardness tester, Superficial Rockwell hardness tester and Full Rockwell hardness tester.

According the operation, there is manual Rockwell hardness tester, motorized Rockwell hardness tester;

According to the display mode, there is analog and digital type;

Based on the test force, there is dead weight type and load-cell driven system type.

Application: Rockwell hardness tester is suitable for quenching modulating, annealing, chilled castings, malleable castings, hard alloy steels, aluminum alloy, copper, bearing steels, etc.

2.Brinell Hardness Tester

Principle: Press a ball indenter into the surface of the sample under a very high test load (usually 500~3000 Kgf), and then remove the testing force after a certain period. The average pressure on the indentation represents the Brinell hardness value. Because Brinell testing often uses a very high test force, it can averages out most surface and sub-surface inconsistencies, thus this hardness testing method is much more accurate than others.

Application: Brinell hardness test is commonly used to test coarse or tough surfaced materials, e.g., castings and forgings. steel, non-ferrous metals and soft alloys.

TIME Group Inc. provides two Brinell Hardness Testers as follows.

3.Vickers Hardness Tester

Principle: Under the effect of the test force, use four diamond-like positive pressure probes to press the surface of the specimen. After a while, remove the test force, and the diagonal length of the specimen surface is measured.

Application: Vickers hardness tester can be used to measure black metal, non-ferrous metal, IC sheet, surface coating, laminating metal, glass, ceramics, agate, gemstone, carbonated layer, hardened and quench-hardened layer, etc.

Classification:

According to the force value:

Micro hardness tester: a Vickers hardness tester with less than 2 kg force exertion.

Vickers hardness tester: a Vickers hardness tester with force exertion range between 2 kg and 120 kg.

4.Universal Hardness Tester

Universal Hardness Tester enables the user to make Rockwell, Brinell and Vickers hardness tests with one single machine.
